FAQ Kparts Watersports – Reglage rake wingfoil
KPARTS is a brand of AP 3D Custom.
The 3D-printed products are 100% manufactured in our workshop in BREST.
The G10 stabilizers are made on a CNC milling machine in the same workshop in BREST.
Rake is an essential parameter in wingfoiling and surf foiling.
Its adjustment is important and depends on both the foil used and the board used.
Indeed, each board shape is different, and foils are not set up the same way from one brand to another. Each brand develops its foils for its boards, which can lead to incompatibilities when mixing a foil from one brand with a board from another.
You may experience either:
Nose down (more common): While riding, the nose of the board points down when you accelerate. Your front leg is more extended than your back leg, and you feel like you have to push down on the latter to maintain some semblance of balance.
Nose up (less common): Difficult takeoff; while riding, the nose of your board is too high. Your front leg is too bent, creating the sensation of having a very (too) responsive foil.
Using a rake shim helps correct the angle of the foil relative to the board and allows you to achieve a suitable stance that fits your riding style.
Rake is a personal adjustment; it depends on your foil, your board, your size, skill level, and settings.
However, here are some guidelines:
If you are really struggling with the stance of your board, where the nose points down too much, and you experience terrible touch downs because the board doesn’t bounce, you probably need between 1.0° and 2.0° of rake.
If you are occasionally disturbed by the nose of the board touching the water when the water is choppy, but on flat water, you’re not bothered much, you likely need between 0.5° and 1.5° of rake to fine-tune your settings.
Choosing a pack of 2 or 3 shims is a safe bet to avoid making the wrong choice, but it doesn’t mean you will only use one shim while the others go unused.
As you progress and sail in different conditions, you will want to optimize your setup according to the day’s conditions. A neutral stance (rake between -0.5° and +0.5°) is ideal in surf foiling or wingfoiling on flat water to optimize takeoff, relaunches, and pumping. A slightly positive stance (rake between +0.5° and +1.5°) is beneficial in wingfoiling on choppy water or in strong winds to enhance comfort and reduce touch downs. In race mode or even freerace, having a positive rake is essential.
